Share Your Perspective: CDLRA’s 2025 Digital Learning Trends Survey Now Open

The Canadian Digital Learning Research Association (CDLRA) has launched its 2025 Digital Learning Trends Survey, continuing its critical work tracking the evolution of digital learning across Canadian post-secondary institutions. This survey represents an essential opportunity for administrators, faculty members, teaching and learning leaders, instructional designers, and other post-secondary professionals to contribute their perspectives on the current state of digital learning.

Building on Years of Valuable Research

Since 2017, the CDLRA has conducted longitudinal research to track digital learning trends in Canadian post-secondary education. After a strategic shift during the pandemic years to collect just-in-time data, the organization resumed its longitudinal research approach in 2023 with the Pan-Canadian Digital Learning Survey Series project. The 2025 survey builds upon these foundations, seeking to identify enduring patterns and emerging trends in digital learning.

The Value of Multiple Perspectives

The CDLRA’s research methodology has evolved significantly over the years. Before 2022, the organization gathered a single shared response from each participating institution. Now, the research team surveys multiple individuals at each institution, representing a variety of roles. This approach provides a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of digital learning trends from different vantage points within the post-secondary ecosystem.

What the Data Tells Us So Far

Recent findings from the CDLRA have revealed several key insights, as detailed in the 2024 Pan-Canadian Report on Digital Learning.

The widespread expectation of increased technology use in post-secondary education continues, with particular growth anticipated in hybrid learning models that blend online and in-person instruction. While learning management systems, online polling, and video-based technologies remain the most commonly used tools, there is growing interest in exploring generative artificial intelligence applications.

Despite these technological advances, confidence in faculty skills to teach effectively in technology-rich environments decreases as modality-specific technological demands increase. This highlights the ongoing need for professional development opportunities that address digital competencies.

The research has also identified academic integrity as a persistent teaching and learning challenge, followed closely by faculty fatigue and burnout. From an operational perspective, concerns about faculty workload and technology infrastructure remain prominent.

How You Can Contribute

The 2025 Digital Learning Trends Survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and will remain open until May 30, 2025. The CDLRA is seeking personal perspectives from individuals across the Canadian post-secondary landscape.

“We continue to work to gather diverse perspectives as we expand our survey reach,” says Dr. Nicole Johnson, Executive Director of the CDLRA. “Understanding the evolving relationship between technology and education from multiple viewpoints is essential to supporting the continued development of high-quality digital learning experiences.”
